NBC superhero drama outperforms Fox action series.

NBC's Heroes. Jack Bauer is not superhuman, but he has superhuman competition.

Last night, Fox's 24, which returned last week for its sixth season, faced off against NBC's new hit Heroes, which returned with its first new episode in a month. When the dust settled, both shows were still standing, Heroes just a bit taller.

The face-off proved both shows can survive. Heroes scored a 6.5 rating/15 share in 18-49s, with 14.8 million average viewers, according to Nielsen, while 24 snagged a 5.4 in 18-49s, with 14.4 million viewers.

At 8 p.m., NBC made a good Deal or No Deal for a 5.2 rating. Fox scored a 4.2 for the return of Prison Break, and ABC earned a 3.5 for Wife Swap. CBS took a combined 3.3 for How I Met Your Mother and The Class. The CW scored a combined a 1.1 for Everybody Hates Chris and All of Us.

At 9 p.m., NBC soared with a 6.5 for Heroes. Fox scored a 5.4 for 24, and CBS took a combined 4.5 for Two and a Half Men and The New Adventures of Old Christine. ABC earned a 3.6 for Supernanny, and CW scored a combined 1.1 for Girlfriends and The Game.

At 10 p.m., CBS scored a 6.0 for CSI: Miami. NBC took a 3.2 for the return of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and ABC earned a 2.6 for What About Brian.
